Coral Cave is located within the 500 Rai Inland Sea area of Rajjaprabha Dam (Cheow Lan Dam) in Surat Thani Province, Thailand. It's under the care of the Huay Tham Chan Forest Protection Unit, Khao Sok National Park.
Key Features
- Coral-like Stalactites and Stalagmites: The cave gets its name from the unique stalactites and stalagmites that resemble underwater coral. These formations are created by the concentrated mineral-rich water dripping from the limestone, combined with special atmospheric conditions, causing them to branch out into small, coral-like structures. It's believed that these rocks were once part of an ancient seabed.
- Fossils Found: Fossils of single-celled marine animals, estimated to be around 250 400 million years old, have been discovered within the limestone inside the cave.
- Cave Conditions: The cave is completely dark but clean, with no musty or bat odors.
Getting There
To reach Coral Cave, you'll need to take a longtail boat from the Cheow Lan Dam pier, which takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. After the boat ride, you'll embark on a jungle trek for approximately 20-30 minutes (some sources indicate about 1.2 kilometer) to another pier. From there, you'll transfer to a bamboo raft for a 10-15 minute ride into the cave.
