LIAN THAI

LIAN THAI
Received the Bib Gourmand award from the Michelin Guide Thailand, and the latest information indicates that it has received this award continuously until the 2025 edition of the guide.
A Century-Old Legacy
Lian Thai is one of the oldest and most legendary traditional coffee houses (Kopi Tiam) in Surat Thani, boasting a history that spans over 80 to 90 years. Located on ** Ban Don Road**, it has been run by the same family for three generations. The name "Lian Thai" carries the classic auspicious meaning often found in Thai-Chinese businesses, symbolizing unity and prosperity.
The Architecture: A Walk Back in Time
The shop is housed in a classic wooden shophouse that has remained largely unchanged for decades.
• The Atmosphere: Stepping into Lian Thai feels like a time machine. You’ll see marble-top tables, vintage wooden chairs, and antique cupboards filled with old tins and ceramic cups.
• The Social Hub: Historically, this was the "parliament" of the local community—a place where merchants, elders, and neighbors met every morning to discuss news, politics, and business over a cup of strong coffee.
The Traditional "Kopi" Experience
Lian Thai is famous for sticking to the traditional roasting and brewing methods. Unlike modern cafes, they use a cloth filter (the "sock" method) to brew their coffee, resulting in a bold, smoky, and nostalgic flavor profile.
Signature Menu Items:
• Kopi (Traditional Coffee): Served with sweetened condensed milk at the bottom of a thick glass.
• Kua Gling / Local Snacks: They are famous for their selection of traditional Southern Thai and Chinese snacks, particularly their steamed buns (Salapao) and dim sum.
• Sangkhaya (Pandan Custard): Their homemade bread with silky, aromatic coconut custard is a favorite among locals.
• Hot Tea: Usually served in small vintage glasses to accompany the heavy breakfast items.
Cultural Preservation
While the world around it has modernized with high-rise buildings and franchised coffee chains, Lian Thai has famously resisted change. The owners have preserved the slow-life essence of Surat Thani. It remains a place where "digital nomads" are rare, and "analog conversations" are the norm.
Why It’s Special Today
Lian Thai has become a pilgrimage site for photographers and "retro" enthusiasts. It represents the Hainanese coffee culture that migrated to Southern Thailand and became an inseparable part of the local identity. It is widely considered the "Living Room of Surat Thani."
