Khao Ok Thalu is the iconic landmark and soul of Phatthalung province. Here is a detailed description of this unique mountain, covering its physical features, legends, and its significance to the local people.

Khao Ok Thalu  The Sacred Heart of Phatthalung
Khao Ok Thalu ("The Mountain with a Hole Pierced Through the Chest") is a distinctive limestone mountain located in the heart of Phatthalung town. Standing at approximately 250 meters high, it serves as the official symbol of the province and is even featured on the Phatthalung provincial seal.

Unique Physical Characteristics
What makes this mountain world-famous is the large circular hole near its summit. This natural opening allows you to see right through to the other side of the mountain. From a distance, it looks like a "pierced chest," giving the mountain its evocative name.

To reach the top, visitors can climb a winding staircase of 1,066 steps. The journey is physically demanding but incredibly rewarding. Once you reach the summit, you are treated to a 360-degree panoramic view of Phatthalung, including the lush green rice fields, the cityscape, and the vast Thale Noi (Little Sea) in the distance.

The Legend of "The Broken Heart"
Local folklore adds a layer of tragic romance to the mountain. According to the legend, Khao Ok Thalu was once a woman involved in a fierce jealousy-driven fight with another woman (represented by a nearby mountain). During the struggle, she was struck so hard in the chest that it left a permanent hole, eventually turning into the stone landmark we see today.

Cultural and Spiritual Significance
For the people of Phatthalung, Khao Ok Thalu is more than just a geological formation; it is a sacred site.

  • The Guardian : Locals believe the mountain acts as a guardian spirit protecting the town.
  • Pilgrimage : Many residents climb the mountain during festivals to make merit and pay respects at the small shrines located along the path and at the peak.
  • Symbolism : It represents the resilience and unique identity of the "Phatthalung-er" spirit.

Visiting Information

  • Best Time to Visit : Early morning (for the sunrise) or late afternoon (to avoid the midday heat).
  • What to Bring : Plenty of water, comfortable walking shoes, and a camera to capture the breathtaking views through the " hole."
