The Pink Dolphin, or Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin, is a species of dolphin that can be found in Thailand, especially in the seas of Donsak District, Surat Thani Province, and Khanom District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.
Distinctive Features:
- Skin Color: At birth, they are a dark gray color, which gradually turns pink as they mature. This pink color does not come from pigment but from the color of blood vessels that help in heat dissipation.
- Long Beak: They have a long and slender beak.
- Humped Back: They have a slightly raised hump on their back.
Habitat: - They are found in the Indian and Western Pacific Oceans.
- In Thailand, they can be found in the sea from Donsak District in Surat Thani. Although other sources may mention Khanom, trips often start from Khanom, where boats then travel to Donsak to find them, as it is the same body of water in the Gulf of Thailand.
Status:
- It is a protected animal under the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act, B.E. 2562 (2019), due to being at high risk of extinction.
Code of Conduct for Watching Pink Dolphins:
- Do not get too close to the dolphins.
- Do not feed the dolphins.
- Do not dispose of trash into the sea.
